Student Safety Summit: PAPSAS Region 5 Meets Naga City Officials

Student affairs and Services practitioners will meet with Naga City Mayor Nelson S. Legacion, and other city and barangay officials to discuss student safety and campus security issues, and craft action plans today, August 14, 2023. This is a follow-up of the partnership meeting and collaborative activities of PAPSAS Region 5 Chapter and the City Government of Naga City. The Student Safety Summit shall be hosted by Ateneo de Naga University.

The student affairs and services practitioners (SAS) from Bicol Region took part in the 27th national convention and training of the Philippine Association of Practitioners of Student Affairs and Services, Inc. (PAPSAS) held at Chali Resort and Conference Center in Cagayan de Oro on November 17-19, 2022. The said event was the first-ever face-to-face national gathering of SAS personnel in the Philippines. It was attended by 290 practitioners from 147 schools.

Seven schools represented Bicol in the assembly, namely: Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU), Bicol University (BU), Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA), Dr. Emilio B Espinosa Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology, Divine Word College of Legazpi, and Shepherdville College.

Two Bicolano participants were elected to the new PAPSAS Board. Dr. Baby Boy Benjamin Nebres III (BU) assumed the position of Vice President for State Universities and Colleges, while Rodolfo ‘Sonny’ Virtus Jr (ADNU), the regional chapter president, was voted in the PRO role. The PAPSAS Region 5 Chapter’s initiatives were featured in the National President’s Report.

Further, ADNU’s Virtus, CSPC’s Charmayn Nate, and DEBESMSCAT’s Froilyn Ancajas and Alvin Mahawan served as facilitators in all the workshops of the national event. In the Socials Night, the Bicol delegation, led by DEBESMSCAT group, performed Masbate-style rodeo dance.

PAPSAS Region 5 Launches Bicol Young Leaders Summit

The Region 5 Chapter of the Philippine Association of Practitioners of Student Affairs and Services, Inc. (PAPSAS) launched the Bicol Young Leaders Summit (BYLS) as its flagship student development program.

The 1st PAPSAS BYLS was hosted by Ateneo de Naga University, Naga City, on January 20 – 21, 2023. More than 200 student leaders, SAS administrators, staff, and advisers from across Bicol Region participated.

Featured speakers: Ralph Jacinto Quiblat (Ateneo de Manila), Magno Edilberto Conag III (Nueca Technologies), and Ben Secretario (Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts). Topics: Self Awareness, Servant Leadership, Project Development, and Collaboration.

Keynote addresses by Naga City Mayor Nelson Legacion and Fr. Roberto Exequiel Rivera, S.J. (ADNU President).

Highlights included an Amazing Race-style challenge, BYLS Got Talent, and project pitches using the Business Model Canvas.

Event led by Jerwin Roy Villacruz and master of ceremony Allysa Salvino, under the supervision of PAPSAS Region 5 President Rodolfo ‘Sonny’ Virtus Jr.

IN FOCUS | PAPSAS Region 5 Chapter: Thriving Together

The PAPSAS Region 5 Chapter has thrived during the pandemic and continues to lead with purpose. It has created vital venues for conversation, collaboration, and capability-building among SAS professionals while championing student development, ethics, and safety across Bicol and the nation.

Key accomplishments include the Student Discipline Cluster Conversation Series, Guidance and Counseling Cluster Series, and Student Organizations’ Leaders and Moderators Conversations. The fully-virtual Regional-turned-National Convention and Training drew over 400 participants nationwide.

In partnership with CHED, the chapter organized impactful webinars and the first face-to-face Bicol SAS Practitioners’ General Assembly. It also pioneered collaboration with local government to review and strengthen student-safety measures.
